HF Kids: God is Holy

Video of the Week

What's the Point?

Scripture: Exodus 40
In this passage: God gives very specific instructions for the Tabernacle, a transportable temple where his holy presence can live among his people. When the Tabernacle is built to specification, God comes and fills the building, hovering over it with a cloud by day and a cloud that glows with fire inside it at night.
Bible Point: God is Holy
Summary Verse: “O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens” (Psalm 8:1).

Talk about this:
Holiness is not a concept kids may be very familiar with, and as they explore God’s holiness, it may make them feel like God is distant because He’s so special. In this lesson, we’ve demonstrated that God is holy, and we stand in awe of him, but he also made a way to live among his people because he’s our friend.
  • What is one thing that amazes you about God?
  • What does God’s holiness mean to you?
  • What do you remember about the Tabernacle?
  • Why did God Want His people to build a tabernacle?
  • Where is the Tabernacle now?
Try this together at home:
  • Create a space in your house; a “holy” place to spend time with God. A blanket fort could be a fun idea!
  • If your child made the craft, you can include it in your special place.
  • Include a Bible in your special space.
  • Spend time with God in your special place as a family.
  • Also, leave the space up for individual time with God throughout the week.

“O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens” (Psalm 8:1).

I am blown away by the wonder that little kids express over the tiniest things. When my own kids were very young, they could focus for a seeming eternity on the movement of an ant. Occasionally, I would watch them watching and marvel at their patience, their curiosity, and their ability to be so present in that moment. Too often, I would find impatience growing in myself as I tried to hasten the moment in order to get on with whatever else was on the agenda for the day.

As we grow older, we can lose the ability to be present and to wonder.  I think that may be one of the reasons adults have such a hard time simply being in God’s presence. Our agendas, obligations, and mundane realities turn our eyes to earth and away from Heaven.

When God asked the Israelites to build the Tabernacle, He was demonstrating the desire for His people to experience His Holiness through His presence. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection and by leaving the Holy Spirit, God created in US a tabernacle so that we could experience His holiness through His presence IN US.

Have we turned Holiness into a box to check or an agenda item to be conquered? If so, take a moment to repent. That is not His desire. Holiness is who God is. In order to experience holiness, we have to be present and experience God the way my little boys experienced the movement of the ant. As we do, we draw near to Him, He draws near to us, and we begin to resemble Him more closely. As our resemblance to Him increases, we grow in Holiness!
What an incredible gift to serve a Holy God!
